The benefits of drinking sparkling water.

Drink without worry.

Drink sparkling water without worry! That is the overall conclusion once you bust the myths about whether or not to drink sparkling water. Let's look at exactly what these myths are and how scientific studies over the years have disproved them.

Myth 1: Drinking sparkling water robs our bones of precious calcium.

Answer: False. In a study [1] carried out in 2006, researchers from the USA and Japan found that drinking cola-type soft drinks is linked to lower hip bone density in women, but they found no such link with other sparkling drinks, such as sparkling water. Another study published in the American Society for Clinical Nutrition journal [2] confirmed that adding carbon dioxide (carbonation) is not linked to calcium loss from the bones. In fact, drinking sparkling water may help lock calcium into your bones.

Myth 2: Drinking sparkling water damages our tooth enamel.

Answer: False. According to a study published in the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation [3], sparkling water does not wear down tooth enamel, because you would need to drink huge amounts of sparkling water to see significant wear. It is worth noting here that you should never compare drinking sparkling water with soft drinks, because soft drinks contain phosphoric acid, which dissolves the calcium in tooth enamel and weakens the teeth.

At this point we should say that drinking sparkling water is one of those rare cases where something we enjoy is not unhealthy! Sparkling water is an excellent alternative to soft drinks, because it doesn't load us up with sugar, chemical preservatives and unnecessary calories. What we do need to watch out for are flavored sparkling waters. Most of them contain fruit juices that may contain sugar and other sweeteners. Also, to make them more "fizzy", they contain huge amounts of sodium, which is bad for our heart!
